Cuneiform Texts from the Library of Ashurbanipal. Some of the oldest known writings in the world come from the cuneiform tablets found in the Library of Ashurbanipal in ancient Mesopotamia.

 

The writing system—first used around 3400 BC—remains a mystery in terms of its true origin. No one knows for sure who developed it. Many of these remarkable tablets are now preserved at The British Museum in London.
